Recommendations for Use
Benzac AC (or benzoyl peroxide) is an antibacterial and effective topical treatment used to treat mild and moderate acne. The remedy also provides a drying effect that makes it easy for the dirt and excess oil to be washed from the skin. It is possible to use Benzac AC together with other treatments aimed at elimination of acne.
Before you start using the remedy check its ingredients to make sure you are going to take the right product. Besides you need to consult a medical professional to make sure the treatment will be right for your personal condition. You might also need to check whether you are allergic to any of its components or not before the first use. To do this, apply some of the product on a small area for several days. If you notice any signs of allergic reactions such as itching, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips, lightheadedness, you need to stop using Benzac AC and seek medical attention immediately. Important: this medication may cause severe allergic reactions or serious skin irritation.
Patients have to wash and dry their hands before and after application of Benzac AC, as well as the treated area. The topical is applied in a thin layer and then rubbed into the skin. Donít forget to shake the remedy before use. It is applied 1-3 times a day according to doctorís recommendations. You may need to use it for several weeks until you notice some improvements, however, continue using it for the full length of the treatment course, as prescribed by your doctor.
Benzoyl peroxide might bleach hair and fabrics, thatís why it is advised to avoid its contact with your clothing and hair. It is advised to store the treatment at room temperature, away from moisture and light, children and pets.
Precautions and Contraindications
Never use benzoyl peroxide in case you are using tretinoin such as Tretin-X, Renova, Avita, Altinac, Retin-A, etc., because their combination may cause an allergic reaction or other health problems. Consult your healthcare provider for additional details and provide him/her with your medical history.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and need to use Benzac AC, it is not known whether it may affect a baby or not. That is why it is recommended to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant while administering the remedy.
Avoid getting the medication in your eyes, mouth, areas of eczema or wounds. Try to stay away from other products that may irritate your skin, e.g. cleansers, certain types of soaps, products that contain alcohol, lime, astringents and spices. Benzac AC might make you sensitive to the sun exposure. It is recommended to avoid staying in the sun or exposed to UV for a long time. Wear protective clothes and use sunscreen (without PABA) outdoors.
In general benzoyl peroxide isnít greatly influenced by other medications, however, you should inform your doctor about all the other remedies, over-the-counter and prescription treatments, herbal supplements and vitamins you use to avoid harmful effects that may arise as a result of drug interactions.
Just like any other medicines Benzac AC may cause side effects. Most of them are common, for example, skin dryness, flaking, peeling irritation, redness, mild burning or stinging, itching, and some are rare and serious, such as severe skin irritation.
